A number of kennels plan to do that Thursday.
"If the dogs were at home with their owners, they would get the turkey, wouldn't they?" said Bonnie Thacker, owner of Sterling Meadows and Bayside kennels, both in Virginia Beach.
The Thanksgiving fare at Thacker's kennels includes unspiced turkey, stuffing and a roll.
Canine Country Club in Virginia Beach is offering chicken breasts, rice and either peas or stringed beans, said Kathy Schaefer, assistant manager.
Some owners prepare Thanksgiving meals in advance for their pets, she said, and the kennel staff will warm the food in a microwave oven.
"We fix an entire turkey for the pets that are here," said Lucy Schack, owner of Chalquest Hilton Kennels in Chesapeake. "I guess they would be having what you would be having, maybe with the exception of cranberry sauce. They get vegetables, potatoes, whatever the norm is."
