Lillian S. Francis, 81, was killed when her car was struck by a pickup truck driven by an off-duty Montgomery County Sheriff's Office correctional officer. The accident happened at about 1:30 p.m. on Huffville Road.
Bob Denham, the driver of the truck, was treated and released at Montgomery Regional Hospital Wednesday evening.
State Trooper R.L. Tompkins said the wreck happened one-tenth of a mile from Denham's home. Tompkins said Denham was on his way to Christiansburg and Francis was on her way home a short distance away.
An investigation is continuing, but Tompkins said Denham is the only witness to the accident. Denham told the trooper he didn't really know how the wreck happened and that he had no time to react.
Huffville Road is an unmarked road with an unposted speed limit of 55 mph, the speed Tompkins estimated Denham was traveling.
The car and the truck collided head-on and Francis' car was knocked backward.
Denham suffered minor injuries, was able to radio for help, get out of his truck and go to a nearby home to call 911.
"He made every effort to save the lady," Tompkins said. "She was dead on impact."
