THE TIPOFF

SPRUCING UP FIR IT: The Festival of Trees begins this morning at 10 o'clock on the 21st floor of Roanoke's First Union Tower. The annual event will showcase 19 trees sponsored by area civic and corporate groups, and visitors will vote for the best display in three categories. The awards ceremony will be Dec. 20.

Not only does the competition provide a look at some stunning Christmas displays, it also provides a towering view of the Roanoke Valley. The exhibition will be open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. It continues through Dec. 24.

Admission is $1 for adults and 50 cents for children ages 6 through 12. Younger children get in free.

The festival is sponsored by the Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley.

SAWING AWAY: The Garth Newel Chamber Players will present an afternoon of chamber music Sunday beginning at 3 o'clock to benefit the Botetourt Fuel Assistance Program. The concert will be at Fincastle Presbyterian Church on Back Street in Fincastle. Donations will provide fuel assistance to needy families. Last year's performance helped 48 families, including the purchase of two furnaces.

Norfolk Southern Foundation underwrites the music. A reception will follow the concert.

FEET DON'T FAIL ME: The Roanoke Ballet Theatre and the Lynchburg Regional Ballet will present ``Holiday Diversions,'' a program of highlights from ``The Nutcracker'' and ``Raymonda,'' Saturday afternoon at 2:30 and Saturday night at 8, and again Sunday afternoon at 2:o30, at the Hollins College Theatre.

Advance tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens and $9 and $7 at the door. For ticket information, call Marie Hart at 345-6099.

JAZZ, MAN: The Radford University Jazz Ensemble will perform Tuesday night at 8 in Preston Hall of Radford University. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children. Call 831-5420.

CHECK YOUR LIST: A Christmas Train, Toy and Doll Show will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Augusta Expoland in Fishersville. It will present dealers from the Middle Atlantic region with items new and old, a bit of baroque music and a morning visit from Santa Claus.

Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for students and free to children under age 12. Call 363-4537 for information.

WALK ON IN THE WIND: Leonard M. Adkins, the ``Habitual Hiker,'' will present a slide and music show called ``The Appalachian Trail:o A Journey of Eastern America'' Tuesday night at 7 in Whitman Auditorium of Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke.

Admission is free.

Adkins has hiked more than 14,000 miles. His third and latest book is devoted to the trails of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Tuesday night's program will present a typical through-hike of the Appalachian trail, which is more than 2,000 miles long.
