Back to the table at United Airlines

CHICAGO - Representatives of the Air Line Pilots Association and the International Association of Machinists said Wednesday they have agreed to meet Dec. 1 with United Airlines officials to resume talks for an employee buyout of the carrier.

The unions, saying the talks were requested by airline management, said they received assurances that the company's representatives now have the ``flexibility and authority to negotiate.''

The fresh talks follow the failure two weeks ago of buyout negotiations with UAL Corp., the Elk Grove Township, Ill.-based parent of United. The unions were seeking employee ownership of 60 percent of the carrier in exchange for concessions.

The machinists union, which represents United's ground crews, has been telling members since Monday to follow safety, work and maintenance rules to the letter, effectively causing flight delays.

\ EEOC suit charges Sears with age bias

CHICAGO - Sears, Roebuck and Co. violated the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act with conditions it put on severance pay to employees, according to a suit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court here.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleges in the suit that requirements Sears imposed on employees for them to receive a severance plan violated the age discrimination act, Gregory Gochanour, an EEOC lawyer, said Wednesday.

Sears requires employees accepting early-retirement packages or severance payments to sign waivers releasing Sears from any age discrimination claims, he said.

In the past two years, Sears has cut staff aggressively.
