CHURCHES ANNOUNCE EVENTS OF THE SEASON

The REV. PETER MARSHALL - a Presbyterian minister and nationally known evangelist and Christian teacher - will speak Monday, 7:30 p.m., at Bob White Boulevard Church of God in Pulaski. His appearance is sponsored by the Christian Coalition of Giles and Pulaski counties.

A native of Washington, D.C., Marshall is the son of Dr. Peter Marshall, who was U.S. Senate chaplain in the late 1940s, and Catherine Marshall LeSourd, a best-selling author.

Marshall is an author in his own right, having co-written two books: "The Light and the Glory" and "From Sea to Shining Sea." A third volume, "Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory," will be published soon.

Marshall believes the United States has lost its moral and spiritual foundation and has become a society in crisis. His message focuses on the need to recover our Christian heritage.

An APPRECIATION SERVICE for evangelists Jerry and Lillian Wyms of Radford will be held at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center, Otey Street on the Virginia Tech campus, tonight at 6. Tickets are $2.

Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent. On the four Tuesdays of the Advent season, CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, Church and Jackson streets, Blacksburg, will offer "Out of Silences," meditations based on the Gospel of Saint Luke. The series begins Tuesday and ends Dec. 21, 7:30 p.m.

The fourth annual gospel sing to benefit the Montgomery County Christmas Store will be held Dec. 11, 7 p.m., at Auburn High School in Riner.

The Nippers, the Pilgrim Gospel Singers, The Martin Family, and others will be on stage. Admission is $3 at the door, children under 12 free. Refreshments will be available.

Dublin's churches will join forces with the town to put on the annual CHRISTMAS PARADE there, Thursday at 7 p.m.

All attending are being asked to bring nonperishable canned goods or toiletries to be placed in a special wagon at the end of the parade. Donated items will be distributed to needy families.

The New River Valley Community Chorus will present the Christmas portion of G.F. Handel's "The Messiah" Dec. 5, 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Pulaski, and Dec. 6., 8 p.m., at Central United Methodist Church, Radford.

\ FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH (Disciples of Christ) in Pulaski is building a ramp to provide easy access to its sanctuary and facilities. The concrete and steel structure will cost about $15,000 and make it possible for those who cannot climb steps to walk into the building or use wheelchairs.

\ PILOT PENTECOSTAL HOLINESS CHURCH, 4491 Old Pike Road (Virginia 615) opens its free clothes closet to the public Wednesdays, 9 a.m.-noon.
