Bankruptcy court gets 11 petitions

Eleven business petitions have been filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Virginia in Roanoke:

Byron-Thomas Inc., trading as Caesars II in Roanoke, is seeking liquidation. President W. Thomas Campbell listed no assets, but liabilities of $91,627.

Morgan Paige Chilson, trading as Exactly Right!, of Roanoke, filed for reorganization, reporting assets of $5,605 and liabilities of $27,676.

Media Design and Images Inc. of Roanoke filed for liquidation. President Diane L. Moore showed assets of $1 and liabilities of $17,407.

Richard Lynn Booth and Connie Belinda Snead Booth of Boones Mill asked for liquidation. The logging business reported assets of $176,780 and liabilities of $258,585.

Teal Mining Inc. of Jewel Ridge filed for reorganization, listing assets of $121,845 and liabilities of $443,260.

Leon Kemery Street Jr., doing business as Street's Service Station in Abingdon, filed for liquidation, reporting assets of $46,500 and liabilities of $82,933.

Curtis Woodrow Lankford and Naomi Jean Lankford of Laurel Fork filed for liquidation. Their lawn-mowing business listed assets of $135,335 and liabilities of about $134,000.

Preston Mansfield Proffit and Patricia Marie Proffit of Abingdon filed for reorganization of their real estate business. They estimated assets and liabilities at less than $50,000 each.

Cecil Duane Hawks and Beth Ellen Hawks of Vinton, who operated a typesetting business, filed for reorganization, listing assets of $52,406 and liabilities of $77,367.

Robert Marshall Luchini and Darcee Lou Luchini, doing business in Bristol as Circle L Trucking, asked for liquidation. They estimated assets at less than $50,000 and liabilities at $100,000 to $499,000.

HLC Inc., operator of The Tavern restaurant in Abingdon, sought liquidation. President Cindy Hackler listed liabilities of $11,236 and no assets. - Staff report

Earnings . . .

H&R Block Inc., a Kansas City, Mo., financial-sevices and tax-preparation firm with outlets in the Roanoke Valley, reported it lost $4.2 million, or 4 cents a share in its second quarter, compared with a loss of $6.8 million, or 6 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenues rose 28.4 percent to $131.2 million from $102.2 million.

Losses for the first six months were $12.4 million, or 12 cents a share, down from $16.4 million, or 15 cents a share, last year. Revenues rose 27 percent, to $234.5 million from $184.7 million.
