Profits that the town's Bicentennial Celebration Commission earned from last year's anniversary events will be used toward building a gazebo for the town.
The commission will turn over a check for $10,221.42 to the Christiansburg-Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, said Ray Lester Jr., treasurer for the commission. The money is left over from sales of souvenirs, books and commemorative items and funds donated for the celebration by local businesses.
"They all said `no,' " when the commission asked businesses if they wanted their money back after the celebration ended, Lester said. The commission voted last summer on what to do with the money.
Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kathy Mantz looks forward to building the gazebo.
"We had expected $9,000, but we'll take $10,000," she said. The chamber already has allotted $2,500 to help fund construction of the gazebo, which could be used for festivals, summer concerts and other events.
Where the gazebo would go is still in question. Two possible locations - at the corner of Franklin and Main streets and to the left of the Municipal Building on Main Street in downtown Christiansburg - are being considered, Mantz said.
She hopes to have to the gazebo built by next September.
