COAL TALKS RESUME AFTER HOLIDAY BREAK

Work resumed Friday on the wording of a proposed contract between the United Mine Workers and the nation's major coal operators, with negotiators saying they won't be rushed.

"There are a lot of changes in this contract, and they want to be sure everyone's clear on everything," said Herb Fishgold, an assistant to federal mediator William Usery. "Too much work has gone into this to rush it at this point."

The UMW went on strike May 10 against selected members of the Bituminous Coal Operators Association over job security. About 17,500 miners are on strike in seven states. Officials for several days have been saying the UMW and the operators are close to nailing down an agreement to replace the one that expired Feb. 1.
