NAMES & CHANGES

Steele elected vice president of cattle group

T.D. STEELE , a Roanoke real estate developer and cattle breeder, has been elected vice president of the American Angus Association. He started in the Angus business in 1950 in partnership with his father and has operated the Lynn Brae herd since 1955.

In 1984, Steele was elected to the board of directors of the Certified Angus Beef Program. Three years later, he was elected to the American Angus Association board of directors and served two three-year terms. During the 1993 fiscal year, he was treasurer of the association.

Steele was the developer of Crossroads and Tanglewood malls.

ARCHITECTS and ENGINEERS

Dewberry & Davis in Marion has promoted BOBBY R. LANE to assistant to the managing principal. He will manage the firm's business development efforts throughout Western and Southwest Virginia and adjoining areas. Lane joined the firm in 1975. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and a master's degree in sanitary engineering.

\ JOSEPH M. BOWMAN succeeds Lane as Marion branch manager and will oversee building engineering services. Bowman has been with the company 11 years and was named assistant branch manager last year. He also is a graduate of Virginia Tech and has a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.

The promotions are part of the Fairfax-based firm's management reorganization.

BANKING

WILLIAM C. DeRUSHA, chairman and chief executive officer of Heilig-Meyers Co., has been named to Signet Banking Corp.'s board of directors. He also has been elected to the board of directors of Signet Bank/Maryland and Signet Bank/Virginia. DeRusha has been chairman of Heilig-Meyers, a retail home furnishings company, since 1984.

HOSPITALITY

The Homestead, a Hot Springs resort hotel, has named RICHARD N. McLENNAN vice president of operations, JOHN N. COLLINS vice president of finance, NEAL N. ANDERSON director of human resources, and WAYNE NOOE director of golf operations. They all come to The Homestead from Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina, a hotel owned by Club Resorts, a unit of the company which recently purchased The Homestead. Also, MARTHA M. HEAGANY joined The Homestead as director of sales and marketing. She formerly worked at The Breakers, a resort in Palm Beach, Fla. Club Resorts is a subsidiary of Club Corporation International.

INVESTMENT

JOSEPH MILTON SEARS JR. has joined the Roanoke office of Scott & Stringfellow Inc. as an investment broker. Sears received a bachelor of business administration degree from Wake Forest University in 1963. Prior to joining Scott & Stringfellow, he was employed by Sears, Roebuck and Co. for more than 30 years. His most recent position at Sears was general manager of the Roanoke store, from which he has retired.

MANUFACTURING

GERALD M. BIRNBACH, chairman of the board and president of Rowe Furniture Corp. in Salem, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the American Furniture Manufacturers Association. Also elected to three-year terms on the board are FRANK HOOKER JR., president and chief operating officer of Hooker Furniture Corp. in Martinsville, and ALBERT L. PRILLAMAN, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of Stanley Furniture Co. in Stanleytown. AFMA is the largest trade association for furniture manufacturers in the U.S., representing more than 70 percent of the country's furniture production.

NONPROFITS

CABELL BRAND has been named chairman of the board of directors of Total Action Against Poverty. Newly elected officers for TAP are MONTY PLYMALE, executive vice president of Central Fidelity Bank, vice president of long range planning and administration committee; BYRON YOST, president of Roanoke area operations of First Union National Bank of Virginia, vice president of the development committee; CHARLES D. FOX III, Charles D. Fox law office, vice president of legal affairs and general counsel; and LAWRENCE HAMLAR, Hamlar & Curtis Funeral Home, vice president of economic development and community relations.

Board members elected for two-year terms are HOUSTON BELL, president of Roanoke Memorial Hospital; RAYMOND COBB, executive vice president of Crestar Bank, representing the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce; FRANK FRIEDMAN, Woods, Rogers & Hazlegrove, representing the Roanoke Bar Association; THE REV. ERNIE JOHNSON, Craig County Board of Supervisors; RICHARD POPP, former president and chief executive officer of Fibercom, representing the United Way of Roanoke Valley Inc.; JUANITA JONES, representing the Hurt Park Neighborhood Alliance; and MEREDITH MILLS, Clifton Forge City Council.
