DEFENDING CHAMPION OUSTED FROM DIVISION III PLAYOFFS

Willie Seiler threw a record six touchdown passes Saturday as St. John's of Minnesota eliminated defending champion Wisconsin-La Crosse 47-25 in the NCAA Division III playoff quarterfinals in La Crosse, Wis.

La Crosse defenders sacked Seiler seven times, but he had a better day than Eagles star quarterback Jason Gonnion who completed only 16 of 43 passes and was intercepted twice.

Seiler's six touchdown passes represent a Division III playoff record. He completed 18 of 32 passes for 332 yards in 25-degree weather.

La Crosse (11-1) was ranked No. 1 in the division's West Region. No. 2 St. John's (12-0) advances to the semifinals against Mount Union, Ohio.

La Crosse led 19-7 on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Gonnion to Bill Schroeder in the second quarter.

An 11-yard touchdown run by running back Matt Malmberg, a 12-yard touchdown pass from Seiler to Malmberg, and scoring passes of 47 and 27 yards to Ryan Murray put St. John's ahead 33-19 at halftime.

After Schroeder scored on a 40-yarder from Gonnion, Seiler passed 59 yards to Chris Palmer for a 40-25 lead with 7:05 left in the third quarter.

Murray caught eight Seiler passes for 151 yards. Malmberg carried 24 times for 99 yards and now has 1,339 for the season.

In Saturday's other games:

\ Rowan 37, Wm. Paterson 0: At Wayne, N.J., Steve Anderson rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns, and Kirby Johnson caught seven passes for 114 yards and a touchdown to lead Rowan past William Paterson in the East Region final.

Rowan (10-1) will face Washington and Jefferson next Saturday in the national semifinals.

Anderson began the Rowan onslaught of William Paterson (8-4) in the first quarter when he raced 33 yards for the first score of the game. Jarvis Perry capped off the quarter with a 14-yard sprint into the end zone. Rowan led 14-0 at the half.

Anderson started off the second half by breaking off a 41-yard run for his second score of the game. Rowan kicker Rob Juliano added a 33-yard field goal. Kirby Johnson caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Ed Hesson with no time left in the third quarter.

Hesson threw for 255 yards and a touchdown. The Rowan offense amassed 430 yards.

Rowan senior Bill Luette collected three interceptions, while adding six tackles.

\ Washington & Jefferson 28, Frostburg State 7: At Frostburg, Md., freshman Jason Baer threw two touchdown passes to J.J. Jarosinski as Washington & Jefferson defeated Frostburg State in the South Region.

Washington (11-0) faces Rowan in the national semifinals. Frostburg State finished the season at 10-2.

Baer also scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter and hit Chris Besley with a 36-yard touchdown pass to close out the scoring in the third quarter. Jarosinski hauled in a 10-yard scoring strike to give W&J a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, and scored on a 37-yard pass in the second quarter.

\ Mount Union 30, Albion 16: At Alliance, Ohio, Jim Gresko scored three touchdowns and gained 175 yards rushing as Mount Union (12-0) remained unbeaten by winning the North Region championship.

Mount Union plays St. John's (12-0) next Saturday in the semifinals while Albion finished at 10-1.
