Harmon served as principal of G.W. Carver Elementary and High School (now Carver Elementary) in Salem from 1953 to 1965. He moved to the school system's central office staff, where he worked until his retirement in 1978.
Harmon, a Pulaski native, received the Roanoke Valley Father of the Year award in education in 1986. He was nominated by his daughter, Marylen.
In a 1986 news article about the award, she said of her father: "[He] constantly comes to the aid of his fellow man, and, at the age of 73, is continuing his efforts to serve his community. He possesses a positive attitude to life."
Harmon, in the same article, said he preferred teaching to working as an administrator.
"I really liked working with the children," he said. "When you're in the classroom, you get to know each child as an individual."
Harmon began his education career as a teacher and principal at elementary and high schools in Pulaski and Wytheville. He also was active in the American Red Cross, Total Action Against Poverty and several other community organizations.
