VIRGINIA OPENS SEASON BY BEATING PENN 92-66

Virginia got a career-high 28 points and 13 rebounds from Wendy Palmer, and the 10th-ranked Cavaliers went on to rout Pennsylvania 92-66 in their women's basketball season opener Saturday.

Palmer was 12-of-18 from the floor, and had 17 points in the first half as the Cavaliers bolted to a 49-36 halftime lead.

Jeffra Gausepohl hit all 10 of her free throws and had a career-high 22 points. Amy Loftsted had 10 points and six rebounds for the Cavaliers, who have never lost a season opener.

Virginia will play at home today against Robert Morris (0-1) at 6 p.m. The game originally was scheduled for 3 p.m., but was moved to the later time slot to allow Virginia fans access to both the men's NCAA soccer tournament quarterfinal game at 1 p.m. and the women's basketball game.\ Radford 85\ Appalachian State 83

RADFORD - Lisa Howard nailed a 15-foot shot with one second remaining as Radford squeaked past the Mountaineers in its season opener.

The Highlanders trailed 42-36 at the break, but came back with a strong second half over its non-conference opponent. Shannan Wilkey led Radford with 26 points, Nicole Gardiner scored 18, and Howard had 17.

Angela Crosby led Appalachian State (0-1) with 30 points and 14 rebounds. The Mountaineers outrebounded the Highlanders 47-33, but turned the ball over 33 times.

Radford had only 13 turnovers.
