The Express, shut out Thursday by Hampton Roads and scoreless through the first two periods, rallied in the third period. Jeff Jestadt stripped IceCaps defenseman Karl Johnston in front of his own net and slid a backhand shot past Raleigh goalie Chad Erickson for the first Roanoke goal in 60 shots. The goal made the score 1-1.
The score was 0-0 after one period, with Erickson stopping Dave "Moose" Morissette on a breakaway at the first intermission buzzer.
Jamie Erb opened the scoring at 1:58 of the second, one-timing a Lyle Wildgoose feed from behind the net for his third goal of the season.
The Express (7-11-0) bombed 18 shots on goal in the third, not counting Tony Szabo and Hughes Bouchard clanging the crossbar behind Erickson less than a minute and a half apart early in the third.
Referee Scott Hansen was forced to stop the game 14 times in ordering the two teams to skate around to break up fog on the ice.
Hansen called the first Raleigh penalty of the game with 2:24 remaining for too many men on the ice. But the Roanoke power play, 0-for-25 in a six-game span, was unable to beat Erickson despite having a sixth attacker for the final 30 seconds of the man advantage.
Raleigh's record is 13-4-4.
\ ICE CHIPS: The Express is idle until Thursday, when the Richmond Renegades visit the Roanoke Civic Center. Roanoke entertains Charlotte on Friday. . . . The Express (7-10) had won two of its previous three games.
