OBIT LEWIS, MATTIE DOUGLAS

LEWIS, Mattie Douglas, 97, formerly of Clifton Forge, died Saturday, November 27, 1993, in the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Lexington. A daughter of the late Mr. Charles and Mrs. Alice Wright Douglas, she was born December 21, 1895, in Highland County. She attended the public school there and became a member of the Methodist Faith. The family moved to Millboro where she lived for a number of years. She later moved to Clifton Forge where she was an employee of the former Hotel Jefferson and of the late Dr. R. L. Claterbaugh Sr. She was preceded in death by a son, Eugene and a daughter, Ruth. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Marie N. Henry of Alexandria; a son, J. B. Lewis Jr. and a loving, caring, daughter-in-law, Mary C. Lewis, both of Lexington; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Howard L. and Elmira T. Lewis of Clifton Forge; a foster son and daughter-in-law, Elbert B. and Joanne Lewis of Central Islip, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Eva L. Smith of Harrisonburg; 13 grandchildren; 30 plus great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Nancy Douglas Brown of Millboro; a caring friend, Mrs. Samantha Poindexter of Lexington; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Friends may call at the Lewis Funeral Home on Monday evening from 7 until 8:30. Family members are requested to gather at the Funeral Home on Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. A graveside service will be held in Evergreen Cemetery, Lexington on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. J. Dennis Rose officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to their local Meals on Wheels Program. Arrangements are being handled by the J. B. Lewis Funeral Service, Lexington.
