DEMOCRATS DROP SUIT OVER N.J. CAMPAIGN

Democrats dropped their lawsuit to overturn Christine Whitman's gubernatorial victory, citing a lack of evidence that Republicans tried to suppress black votes.

Whitman then tried to turn the tables Monday on Democratic State Chairman Raymond Lesniak, calling on him to apologize to black ministers.

The lawsuit was filed after Whitman's former campaign manager, Ed Rollins, told reporters in Washington on Nov. 9 that $500,000 was paid to black ministers and Democratic workers not to get urban voters to the polls.

Rollins later retracted his statment.

The Democrats said they would monitor investigations into Rollins' comments by the U.S. Attorney's Office and two specially appointed former state attorneys general, and would refile the lawsuit if evidence of wrongdoing was uncovered.
