DOLE, GINGRICH TO RAISE FUNDS FOR GOODLATTE

Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Roanoke, is bringing in two big guns to help him begin his first re-election campaign: Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole and House Minority Whip Newt Gingrich.

Gingrich, R-Ga., will appear at a fund-raiser in Harrisonburg on Monday at the home of poultry executive Chip Strickler.

A week later, Dole, R-Kan., will speak at a $150-per-couple reception at the Radisson Patrick Henry Hotel in Roanoke.

A Goodlatte spokesman said he expects the Dole event to raise about $60,000, and billed it as perhaps the largest Republican fund-raising event ever to be held in the Roanoke Valley.

When the next campaign finance reports are filed in January, Goodlatte expects to have $100,000 for his 1994 re-election drive, said aide Tim Phillips.

That would be a handsome amount to have stockpiled - Goodlatte spent about $475,000 in his initial race in 1992 - and Goodlatte obviously hopes a fat campaign treasury will deter any Democratic challengers.

"We're not taking anything for granted," Phillips said. He was especially delighted to have corralled a visit from Dole, whom he called "right now the key leader of the Republican Party."

So far, no Democratic opponents have surfaced publicly. However, "we do expect to run somebody and we do expect to run somebody strong," said 6th District Democratic Chairman Onzlee Ware. "There are two or three people with some feelers out."

Goodlatte won his first term in 1992 by defeating Vinton insurance executive Steve Musselwhite. In that race, Goodlatte bucked a Democratic trend nationwide and took 60 percent of the vote in the district.
