RECOGNIZING A MOM'S NEEDS

Shirley Rehfield knows the dips and climbs of being a single mother. That's one of the reasons she contributed to the Good Neighbors Fund.

Once a single mother herself, Rehfield says she feels an obligation to help others, now that she is in a position to do so.

Rehfield read about the plight of Dottie (not her real name), 50, a Roanoke woman struggling to raise her teen-age daughter and her son's 6-year-old child, and felt immediate sympathy for her.

Dottie is studying to be a licensed practical nurse, but lacks the money for the certification exam. Rehfield sees Dottie as just the kind of person who needs her help.

"I firmly believe in trying to better yourself through education," Rehfield says. "Having come this far and worked that hard, $75 shouldn't stop her from getting her license."
