OBIT--HARMON, CHAUNCEY D.

HARMON, Chauncey D., 80, of Salem, formerly of Pulaski, Va., died Friday, November 26, 1993 at the Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y. He was born May 18, 1913 in Pulaski, Va., the son of the late Wilmer and Mary Belle Howard Harmon. He attended Calfee Training School in Pulaski and later attended Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Ala. He graduated in 1935, with a major in Business Administration. He later received a Masters Degree from Columbia University in New York. He served as a teacher and principal of Calfee Training School in Pulaski, Va., and Scott Memorial High School in Wytheville, Va. He moved to Salem, Va. in 1953, and served as principal of Carver High School until 1966. He then joined the Central Office staff and served as an Administrator until his retirement in July, 1978. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Magazine St., Pulaski, Va. and an associate member of the First Baptist Church, Salem, Va. He formerly served on many educational, service and civic committees. He was president of the Ninth District Teacher's Association for many years, a member of the Va. Education Association and Roanoke Co. Education Association; treasurer of the Roanoke Co. Council of Parents and Teachers Association; president and treasurer of the Roanoke Regional Visiting Teachers Association, the first treasurer of the Rke. Co. Schools Employees Federal Credit Union, member of the first board of directors of Total Action Against Poverty of Roanoke Valley, Roanoke Valley Council of Community Services, United Way of Roanoke Valley, Red Cross Board of Directors, Burrell Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, special committee to establish a hospital in Salem, Salem Educational Foundation, Roanoke County-Salem Agricultural Extension Advisory Committee, board of Directors of Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Association, (We the People Committee), Salem NAACP, and the Carver Reunion Association. Survivors include his wife, Lucy Martin Harmon, Salem; one son, Chauncey D. Harmon II, Sherwood, Ark.; daughter-in-law Bevelyn A. Harmon; granddaughters, Chaunay and Corlita; one daughter, Dr. Marylen E. Harmon, Roanoke; one brother, George Eli Harmon, Brintwood, N.Y.; four sisters, Margaret Haynes, Detroit, Mich., Lilita Robinson, Pulaski, Anna Bell Pinkney, Los Angeles, Calif., Deloris Wilson, Westbury, N.Y.; a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral service 1 p.m. Thursday at the first Baptist Church, 226 S. Broad St., Salem, Va. with dr. James A. braxton officiating. Burial will be in Pinehurst Cemetery, Pulaski. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8 at the First Baptist Church, Broad St., Salem. Arrangemants by Penns Funeral Home.
