COAL TALKS VEILED BY NEWS BLACKOUT

The United Mine Workers met again Wednesday with coal operators to work on the written details of a proposed new contract, a spokeswoman for mediator Bill Usery said.

The negotiations are under a news blackout requested by Usery. Neither the UMW nor the Bituminous Coal Operators Association has provided information on the meetings.

The UMW has been on strike since May 10 in what it says is a dispute over job security and future employment for its members.

The union says it has 17,500 members on strike in seven states in Appalachia and the Midwest.

Their contract with the coal operators expired Feb. 1.

Airlines cough up LA's landing fees

WASHINGTON - Airlines grudgingly agreed Wednesday to pay millions of dollars in additional fees for landing in Los Angeles in a deal that averts the threatened closing this weekend of one of America's busiest airports.

The airlines, under protest, agreed to pay increased landing fees Los Angeles International Airport adopted July 1.

The airlines will pay between $16 million and $18 million immediately, including retroactive increases to last July.

The airport promised no further increases before next July.

Los Angeles International Airport has nearly 2,000 takeoffs and landings a day.

Fees were more than tripled July 1 from 51 cents to $1.56 per 1,000 pounds.

That means a Boeing 747 landing costs an airline about $900.

GM recalls minivans, sport/utility vehicles

DETROIT - General Motors Corp. said it will recall 600,000 minivans and sport/utility vehicles with potentially defective front seats - as soon as it gets the parts to repair them.

At least 28 people have been hurt when the seats collapsed. Four people received minor injuries when the seats collapsed while the vehicles were moving. The other injuries occurred while the vehicles were parked.

The vehicles are 1985-1991 Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari minivans and 1989-1990 Chevrolet and GMC Suburban sport/utility vehicles with front bucket seats. Suburbans with bench-style front seats are unaffected.

Merrill Lynch accused of bias

Merrill Lynch & Co., the nation's largest brokerage house, was accused in a $5 million claim Tuesday of discriminating against black stockbrokers at three offices in the San Francisco area.

The claim contends the company favored white brokers when it came to assigning accounts.

Financial consultants earn commissions based on the amount of business they generate, so brokers can earn more based on which accounts they handle.

Merrill Lynch has a longstanding policy against discrimination, spokesman Bill Clark said in New York.

Nine of the 10 people who filed the claim have left Merrill Lynch.
