CITADEL ASKS JUDGES TO LET IT BLOCK WOMAN

The Citadel, seeking to block a woman from attending day classes at the all-male military college, argued Wednesday that a federal appeals court overstepped its powers in letting her in.

The school asked the full 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider a three-judge panel's order allowing Shannon Faulkner to attend day classes.

In its petition, the state-supported school also said the court misapplied rules for reviewing preliminary injunctions.

U.S. District Judge C. Weston Houck issued an injunction in August allowing Faulkner to attend classes, but not participate in military training, while her lawsuit challenging The Citadel's admissions policy was heard.

The appeals court panel, in a 2-1 decision last month, upheld the injunction. The Citadel wants all 13 appeals judges to rehear the issue. - Associated Press
