The Spiders succeeded. With the help of Eugene Burroughs and Michael Hodges, who combined for 33 points, Richmond (2-0) beat the Keydets 74-55 in college basketball.
VMI (1-1) used hot second-half shooting on Monday to break a 16-game losing streak that dated to last season. The Keydets beat Bluefield College 97-58, snapping the nation's second-longest losing streak.
Against Richmond, VMI was ice cold. The Keydets shot 37 percent from the floor, 28 percent (9-of-32) in the second half.
"You can't fault the effort tonight," said Joe Cantafio, the Keydets' coach. "I thought the effort was there. We made a lot of freshman mistakes, but that's to be expected. We've got a lot of freshmen.
"I was very disappointed with the shot selection at some times with all the freshman, but they made some of those shots. I don't want them to get gun shy."
Freshmen led the Keydets in scoring. Warren Johnson had 22 and Maurice Spencer added nine on 4-of-15 shooting from the field.
"I think we were just working a little too hard," Spencer said. "I feel like a trust has been broken with the team and the only way to get that back is to go to work. We need to settle down and have some fun."
The Keydets trailed 46-33 at halftime, but came back in the second half to cut the deficit to seven, at 55-49 with 6:45 to play. However, Richmond scored six in a row to put away the Keydets.
"That was the ballgame right there," Cantafio said.
