The county will receive nearly $44,000, and Radford will get just over $11,100 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs.
Rates of unemployment, poverty and the area population determined the award amounts. Montgomery County received the sixth largest amount in the state among qualified jurisdictions.
Selection was made by a national board of affiliates of voluntary organizations and chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. United Way of America provided the administrative staff and functioned as fiscal agent.
A local board that includes representatives of the United Way, the American Red Cross and New River Community Action will determine how funds are distributed. Qualifying organizations are being urged to apply now. Eligible local government or private voluntary organizations must be nonprofit and nondiscriminatory and have demonstrated capability to provide emergency food or shelter.
The application deadline is Dec. 8. For more information, call United Way of Montgomery County and Radford at 381-2066.
