WAYNE THOMPSON, formerly of Roanoke, received several awards from the Carolinas Association of Business Communicators and the International Association of Business Communicators.

He won a first-place award for best communication campaign for his presentation of the results of "Preventing Teen Pregnancy in Forsyth County" (North Carolina), a study by researchers at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, where he works. He also received a citation for the booklet accompanying the presentation; third place for black-and-white photography in the same contest; and a silver award for personality profiles in the IABC competition.

Thompson, son of James V. and the late Barbara W. Thompson of 3505 Old Towne Road S.W., is a 1980 graduate of Cave Spring High School and 1984 graduate of the School of Journalism at the University of North Carolina.

\ GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPICE of Roanoke recently received the President's Award for Community and Public Awareness for its public service announcement, "I Miss That Place," at the National Hospice Organization's Awards of Excellence in Educational Programming Competition.

The hospice also received honorable mention for its billboard entry.

\ LEN DESHANO of Roanoke attended the 1993 Central Reserve Life Insurance Co. Annual General Agents' Conference held in Hilton Head, S.C. Deshano, a general agent since 1990, was selected to attend the conference based on his sales and productivity.

\ DOTTIE SLAYDON, a sales associate with Century 21 Young Realty in Salem, was recognized for her membership in the Masters Emerald Club during the awards portion of the company's recent annual conference in Virginia Beach.

The Masters Emerald Club, which is the third-highest masters level, is designed to honor sales associates who consistently achieve outstanding levels of production for three years.

\ SHIRLEY E. HAMMOND of Colors Too Inc. at Towers Mall has been certified as a paramedical camouflage consultant. She will be working with individuals with birthmarks, vitiligo, scleroderma and other skin discolorations.

\ HILL STUDIO P.C. of Roanoke received honor and merit awards during the recent annual dinner of the Virginia Chapter, American Society of Landscape Architects.

Hill received an honor award in the research and communication category for its Blue Ridge Parkway Exhibition shown at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. The project was an analysis of design and construction on one of the state's largest and most famous works of landscape architecture. The studio also earned a merit award in the planning and analysis category for its Interstate 81 View Planning Study, which proposes design controls for the 72 interchanges along Interstate 81 and landscape preservation and enhancement measures for the rural areas along the 328-mile corridor.

\ JOEY PHILPOTT of Roanoke has been named the lottery sales representative of the year by the Virginia Lottery.

Philpott has been with the Virginia Lottery for four years and covers accounts in the Martinsville, Henry County and Franklin County areas.

\ CRESTAR BANK of Roanoke has implemented a Career Achievement Program and is recognizing employees' tenure. \ LIFT TECHNOLOGIES INTERNATIONAL, part of Taylor Technologies Group of Roanoke, recently received a certificate of accreditation from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

LTI is one of only three organizations worldwide accredited to issue certifications to qualified elevator inspectors and inspection supervisors and will offer educational seminars and certification examinations in Roanoke and around the nation.

\ LYNN BRAE ASSOCIATES of Roanoke ranked second in registering the most Angus beef cattle in Virginia with the American Angus Association for the 1993 fiscal year. Brae Associates registered 340 head.

\ LAWRENCE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS INC. of Roanoke has received an Award of Excellence from United Van Lines for significant professional achievement in shipment handling, operational safety and providing high-quality customer service.

\ JOANNE BREWER, office manager for ADIA employment services, has been named 1993 Boss Business Associate by the North Roanoke Chapter of the American Business Women's Association.

Brewer has worked for ADIA for 15 years and has earned numerous awards.

The chapter recently elected Denise Thomas president. Other new officers are: Phyllis Rouse, vice president; Brenda Cooper, treasurer; Mary Martin, recording secretary; and Kaye Simpson, corresponding secretary.

\ STEPHEN PHILLIPS of Roanoke has completed studies in gem identification with the Gem Institute of America, Santa Monica, Calif., and has been awarded the Gem Identification certificate.

\ AQUARIUS POOLS INC., with one of its 99 locations on Williamson Road, has been named as one of the top 100 businesses in the spa and pool industry by AQUA magazine, a trade publication for spa and pool professionals.

Businesses are chosen for the AQUA 100 by industry peers based on sound business practices and dedication to quality customer service.

Jerry Green has owned and operated the Roanoke store for 20 years.

\ BOB HALE, owner of Robert Hale Piano Service in Roanoke, was one of five piano technicians from the United States and Canada selected to attend a recent piano technology seminar at the Steinway Piano Factory, Long Island, N.Y.

The purpose of the seminar was to acquaint concert technicians with new procedures in preparing pianos on the concert stage.

\ JIM ASPELL of Virginia Truck Center Inc. in Roanoke was named southern region and national champion of the second annual Parts Counter Salesperson awards program sponsored by Mack Trucks Inc.

Aspell was recognized for demonstrating outstanding interpersonal skills, sales ability and parts knowledge.

The competition included 24 participants who were asked to field various customer requests under a typical sales situation.

\ ANNA WEST, manager of the Oak Grove Branch of Southwest Virginia Savings Bank, was recently elected president of the Tanglewood Chapter of the American Business Women's Association.

Other elected officers of the association, which provides business training for women of diverse backgrounds, include: Kathleen Page, vice president; Pam Atkinson, corresponding secretary; Mary Beth Cornett, recording secretary; and Leah Russell, treasurer.

\ JUDY GRIESENBROCK and THOMAS CURRY FISHER III recently completed the Community Economic Development Basic Course at the Virginia Institute for Economic Development.

Griesenbrock is executive vice president of the Salem/Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce, and Fisher is a planner for Total Action Against Poverty.

\ ROBERT THOMAS GORDON of Appalachian Power Co. in Roanoke has earned certification as a human resources professional from the Human Resource Certification Institute.
