The Fincastle Christmas parade will be held Saturdayat 2 p.m.

The parade, sponsored by the Town of Fincastle, will form at Breckinridge Elementary School and return to the school.

Cash prizes will be given to the best float for originality, theme, beauty and efforts. All bands participating will receive an honorarium.

Spectators are asked to bring canned and nonperishable foods for the Fincastle Ruritans' float for the food pantry.

A Christmas home decorating contest also will be held, although judging will not be until Dec. 15. Lights should be turned on by 6 p.m. Awards will be given in three catergories - commercial, traditional, and Colonial or Victorian.

\ Gala raises money for adult care services

The Roanoke Chapter of The Links Inc. recently raised $2,000 to help provide day care services for the elderly in Roanoke Valley.

The Links will be compiling a list of elderly residents who need day-care service and pay for those services on a contractual basis at adult care centers.

The money was raised during The Links' annual gala, in which the service organization honored 15 Roanoke Valley residents as "Roanokers on the Move."

A special award was presented to Dr. Maynard Law for his contributions in the fields of medicine and civil rights. The Harrison Museum of African American Culture also was presented an award.

Others recognized for their contributions to the community were:

Art - Antoinette Hale.

Business management - James Burks, Marilyn Curtis and Gardner Smith.

Communication - JoAnne Poindexter and Cassandra Finch.

Education - Delores Johns and George Franklin.

Entrepreneur - Danette Hooper.

Humanitarian - Emerson Gilmer.

Religion - The Rev. Dwight Steele.

Legal profession - Onzlee Ware and E. Ann Hill.

Medical profession - Dr. LeGree Hallman and Dr. Conrad Claytor.

\ Neighborhood group awarded by council

The Northwest Neighborhood Environmental Organization recently received the Award of Excellence from Roanoke's Clean Valley Council.

Others awarded were: the City of Roanoke, Government Award for Recycling and Waste Minimization Programs; Roanoke City Police Department's D.A.R.E. program, Recycling Award; Explore Park, Clean-Up Award; and William Byrd High School, Education Award.

\ 30 honored for work on behalf of children

The Roanoke County Education Association honored 30 individuals and organizations for their work on behalf of children with "We Teach the Children Whole Village Awards" during its American Education Week celebration.

The award's name comes from an African proverb, "It takes a whole village to educate a child," said Debbie McClure, association president.

Recipients included PTA groups and committees at Back Creek, Fort Lewis, Glen Cove, Green Valley, Mountain View, Penn Forest, and Roland E. Cook elementary schools; and Glenvar High and Cave Spring Junior High schools.

Also being recognized were volunteers and support staff members at Burlington, Cave Spring, Glenvar, Herman L. Horn, Mason's Cove, Oak Grove, and W.E. Cundiff elementary schools; William Byrd High and Hidden Valley Junior High schools; and Lewis Gale Clinic, C&P Telephone, Tultex, General Electric, Frame 'N Things; also Bob Johnson and Bayes Wilson.

Along with community support systems, the education association is engaged in a year-long program to get parents involved in homework and schoolwork and to work with their children's teachers.

\ Volunteers sought for New Year's Eve event

Roanoke Festival in the Park is seeking volunteers to assist with activities at First Night Roanoke.

The third annual alcohol-free downtown New Year's Eve celebration will include 35 hands-on art activities, a miniature golf course, a theatre car, an art car and concession sales.
