CHRISTMAS STORE BEHIND SCHEDULE; ORGANIZERS `PANICKED'

The Montgomery County Christmas store will open next week, but organizers are worried because fund-raising efforts for the community project are well behind schedule.

``We're getting quite panicked,'' said Joyce Hendricks, co-chairwoman of this year's store.

Volunteers have raised just over $50,000 of the store's $98,000 goal, Hendricks said.

The store, operating for the 11th year, gives families in need an opportunity to pick out clothes, toys and food during the holiday season.

The store helped 1,173 families last year and hopes to help 1,250 families this year, Hendricks said.

The store will host its open house at the former Heck's location on Roanoke Street on Wednesday and the public is encouraged to attend.

Families who have qualified for assistance will shop at the store Dec. 9-11.

Hendricks said the store is accepting donations of new and used clothing, toys and food, but prefers cash donations if possible.

``Every dollar donated we can turn into two, by bargain hunting,'' she said.

Specific items still needed include warm childrens' clothing - though they have enough winter coats - linens, sheets and towels.

The Christmas store is also still looking for volunteers able to help out during store hours.

Anyone interested in helping should call 381-0585.

Donations can be dropped off at the Northside Presbyterian Church in Blacksburg on Saturday, taken to the store, which is located across the street from Hills, or mailed to: P.O. Box 221, Blacksburg, Va., 24063.
