ROANOKE TENNIS PLAYER WINS SPORTSMAN AWARD

Greg McCray, son of David and Diana McCray of Roanoke, recently received the Junior Sportsmanship of the Year Award from the United States Tennis Association.

McCray, a freshman at Patrick Henry High School, was nominated for the award by tournament directors in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.\

Roanoker ranks in top skiers in age group

Julie Bell of Roanoke has been ranked in the top 10 skiers in her age group in Virginia.

Bell, daughter of Carroll and Cadell Bell, is ranked eighth in the Coca-Cola Junior National Standard Race rankings for 7- to 9-year-olds. This is the second year the 8-year-old Bell, a pupil at Oak Grove Elementary, has ranked in the state. She was ranked seventh as a 6-year-old.

Bell earned a season best handicap of 47 while skiing at The Homestead in Hot Springs. The score means she was 47 percent behind Erik Schlopy, the NASTAR national pacesetter and U.S. Ski Team member.

At the end of each season, NASTAR ranks the top recreational skiers nationally and in all 50 states.
