HELP-WANTED INDEX SHOWS MAJOR GAIN

An index that measures labor demand through newspaper help-wanted advertising registered a strong gain in October, according to a report released Thursday.

The Conference Board, a private business research organization in New York, said its Help-Wanted Advertising Index stood at 105 points in October, up from 101 in September and 91 in October 1992. In the South Atlantic region, including Virginia, the index registered 111 points in October, compared with 104 a month earlier and 96 a year earlier.

The index is based on the volume of classified jobs advertising in 51 major U.S. newspaper. The Conference Board said 76 percent of those papers reported increasing volumes of such ads in October, compared with 49 percent in September and 67 percent a year ago.
