CAN RIVERBOAT CASINOS KEEP STATE AFLOAT?

Riverboat gambling in Virginia could create 24,000 jobs, revive the state's shipbuilding industry and generate $123 million a year in state and local taxes, advocates of the floating casinos said Thursday.

The Virginia Riverboat Council, a consortium of cruise ship owners and others seeking to profit from riverboat gambling, promoted the idea at a news conference.

A bill to authorizing a referendum on riverboat gambling was killed by a House of Delegates committee last year. The bill's sponsor, Del. Jerrauld Jones, D-Norfolk, plans to try again in the legislative session that begins in January.
