CAVS START WITH WIN OVER HAWKS

Shane Donavant scored a basket as the buzzer sounded to lift Fieldale-Collinsville to a 70-69 Piedmont District boys' basketball victory over Gretna in the opener for both Friday night.

Brian Alley inbounded the ball to Donavant with seven-tenths of a second remaining.

Ben Seay score 20 points to lead the Cavaliers. Donavant added 16, and Alley scored 10.

William Merritt hit 19 for the Hawks, and Jason Tucker added 18. \

Martinsville 68

Dan River 56

RINGGOLD - Michael Martin scored 23 points, and Carlos Martin added 14 as the Bulldogs rolled past the Wildcats in a Piedmont District season opener for both teams.

Martinsville led by a point after the first quarter but used a 20-10 second period to take advantage.

Chris Wilson's 10 points led Dan River, which turned over the ball 20 times.

MARTINSVILLE - Girard Foster, Warrick Scott and Tyree Adams combined for 37 points to lead the Lancers over the Bengals in the teams' season-opener.

Foster had 14 points, Scott had 12 and Adams had 11 points for the Lancers.

The Bengals' Art Wade led all scorers with 18 points in the Piedmont District game.

Patrick County 53

STUART - Jermaine Simmons and Tony Holmes combined for 36 points as the Warriors routed the Cougars in a Piedmont District season-opening game for both teams.

Evan Penn added 10 points for Magna Vista.

Sandy Hines and Ray Hylton each had 13 for Patrick County. \

COVINGTON - The Patriots used a 45-21 rebounding advantage defeat the Mountaineers in a non-district season opener for both teams.

Quinton Twine led Group AAA Patrick Henry with 21 points. Shannon Taylor added 18, Maurice Preston had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Vince McGhee scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Patriots went on a 7-2 run to close the first half with a seven-point lead and were helped by Group AA Alleghany's 11-of-23 free-throw shooting.

Todd Wheatley led the Mountaineers with 15 points.

HILLSVILLE - Matt Larrowe scored 20 points and had several offensive rebounds in a key 25-11 second period as the Cavaliers beat the Maroon Tide in a non-district season opener for both teams.

Galax led 13-12 after one quarter, but the Cavaliers stormed back with a huge second period to take a 13-point halftime lead.

Tito Crockett led Galax with 13 points.

James Stokes scored 18 points, William Fitzgerald had 15 and Derrick Hines added 12 to lead the Colonels past the visiting Hilltoppers in a non-district game.

Abby Dickson had 19 points and nine rebounds, 11 of the points coming in the first quarter as tournament host Roanoke Cathlic forged ahead to a 10-point lead in an opening-round victory over the Red Devils in the Private School Tip-Off.

Teresa Monsour, the Roanoke Catholic point guard, had 12 points, four assists, and five steals for the Celtics (1-1).

Roanoke Cathlic plays North Cross for the tournament championship at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Catholic. Roanoke Valley Christian and Stuart Hall play in the 6 p.m. consolation game.

\ Covington Boys' Home 98, Ballard Christian 47: At Ballard, W.Va., Scottie Forbes had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead Covington Boys Home to an easy victory. Sean Riddick added 17 points and nine rebounds as Covington Boys Home remained unbeaten on the season (3-0). Ballard Christian got 17 points from Kenny Spencer. \
