ALFANO TRIES TO TIE RECORD

Carol Alfano can tie former men's coach Charles Moir for the most victories by a Virginia Tech basketball coach when the Hokies face Ohio University at 7 p.m. today in a women's game at Cassell Coliseum.

Alfano, whose team opened its season with a 102-43 victory over Western Carolina on Wednesday night, has won 212 games at Tech.

In other basketball:

Two highly-regarded teams will participate in the Ferrum Invitational women's basketball tournament today and Sunday. Maryville and Marymount played in the NCAA Division III Tournament last season.

Maryville is led by senior Leah Onks (27.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game). Marymount has seniors Violaine Romans (21.7 ppg, 11.7 rpg) and Karen Still (18.7 ppg, 8 rpg).

Ferrum (1-2) boasts four scorers averaging double figures: Sarah Quesenberry (13.3), Niki Claiborne (10.7), Kia Williams (10.3) and Glossary Smith (12).

Maryville plays Methodist at 1 p.m., and Ferrum takes on Marymount at 3 p.m. today. On Sunday, Methodist and Marymount play at 1 p.m. and Ferrum faces Maryville at 3 p.m.
