TERRY RAISED MORE CASH THAN ALLEN

Republican Gov.-elect George Allen received a surge of contributions as he neared victory, but Democrat Mary Sue Terry raised more money in their race for governor.

Post-election reports filed with the State Board of Elections on Thursday showed that Terry raised $6.5 million while Allen collected $5.7 million.

But as polls showed Allen ahead in the campaign's final 10 days, the Republican raised $1.3 million to Terry's $470,260.

Both campaigns ended with a surplus. Allen reported a balance of $59,000, which is being spent to supplement the $65,000 in state money supplied to run the transition office, said Ken Stroupe, an Allen spokesman.

Terry finished with a balance of $73,289. State law allows a candidate to refund a surplus to contributors or donate it to another candidate, a political party, a political organization or charity.

"We still have bills to pay. We're just going to transfer it over to another account," said Lisa Myers, a spokeswoman for Terry.

Terry has returned from a vacation but has not decided what she will do next, Myers said.

Allen spent twice as much as Terry in the days before the Nov. 2 election, which he won by 17 points. She spent $737,839 and he spent $1.4 million.
