OBIT HARPER, JOHN I.
HARPER, John I., 89, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, December 1, 1993, at
Community Hospital. He was born in Wirtz, Va., the son of the late Emma H.
Harper and Daryle Harper. He is preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth
Lawton Harper; a son, Wardell Harper; a daughter, Alberta H. Miller. He was a
member of Second Mount Airy Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and on
various project committees. He was employed by Norfolk and Western Railroad,
until his retirement in 1969. He is survived by two sons, James W. Harper and
Charles J. Harper; two daughters-in-law, Naomi S. Harper, Roanoke, and Ruby H.
Poindexter, Rocky Mount; seven daughters and one son-in-law, Melva H.
Poindexter, Madaline M. Harper, New Orleans, La., Reonia L. Kent, Beulah
Harper, Eula H. Taylor. Lilly P. Harper, Margaret H. and Charles A. Swaine,
Boones Mill, Va.; two sisters, Cornilia H. Helms, Reva H. Stewart; one brother
and sister-in-law, Jim and Julia C. Harper, Roanoke. The body may be viewed
Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hamlar & Curtis Funeral Home. The family will
receive friends on Sunday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at Second Mount Airy
Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 6, 1993 at 2
p.m. at Second Mount Airy Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leroy Carter
officiating. Interment will follow in the Second Mount Airy Cemetery.
