OBIT SHERMAN, JOHN W.
SHERMAN, John W., 91, of Harrisonburg, formerly of Pearisburg died Friday,
December 3, 1993, at Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community Center,
Harrisonburg, Va. Born at Burketown, Va. on July 15, 1902, Mr. Sherman was one
of 10 children of Charles T. Sherman and Nettie Gray Cropp Sherman. He
attended Randolph Macon Academy and graduated from Hampden-Sydney College. He
earned his ministerial degree from Union Theological Seminary in 1931. Mr.
Sherman was chaplain at the Masonic Home, Richmond. He was pastor of the
Melrose Presbyterian Church, Roanoke before becoming pastor of the Pearisburg
Presbyterian Church in September 1945. During his pastorate, a new manse was
built in 1947 and a new church building was completed in 1956. Mr. Sherman
also held regular services at Hoges Chapel Presbyterian Church, Walker's Creek
Presbyterian Church and Shady Grove Methodist Church. After retiring in August
1967, Mr. Sherman was interim pastor for Roanoke Valley Presbyterian Church
near Blacksburg, Va. He and his wife, Laura C. Sherman who predeceased him,
became residents of Sunnyside in 1981 where Rev. Sherman ministered to
patients in that facility's Health Care Unit. Mr. Sherman was a Mason for more
than 50 years. He had been a member of the Pearisburg Kawanis Club and the
Giles County Ministerial Assoication. He is survived by two sons, John W.
Sherman III of Annandale, Va., Anthony C. Sherman of Southington, Ct.; one
sister, Helen Sherman Wilson of Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community;
one brother, Theodore R. Sherman of Westminister, Md.; four grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 6,
1993, at 2:30 p.m. in the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Alan
Harvey officiating with entombment in Birchlawn Abby. The family will receive
friends at the Givens Funeral Home, Pearisburg Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.
