`WEDNESDAY WONDERINGS' SEMINARS FOR RETIREES PLANNED

"Youth is not time of life,

It is a state of mind,

A product of the imagination,

A vigor of the emotions,

A predominance of courage over timidity;

An appetite for adventure."

- Anonymous

If you're filling in slots in your 1994 calendar, mark these First Wednesday Wonderings sponsored by the VIRGINIA CENTER FOR ACTIVE RETIREMENT. Cost is $5, and advance registration is required. Call 231-5183 to register.

\ Jan. 5: Tourism in Your Community.

\ Feb. 2: How to Disagree Without Being Disagreeable.

\ March 2: Getting the Most From Your Long-Term Care Programs.

In addition to these Wednesday sessions, the center is actively pursuing several special programs which meet its objectives of education and information & referral.

According to co-director Loretta Buffer, a survey was taken last year of retired Virginia Tech faculty interested in helping academically disadvantaged students. Twelve of the respondents will begin an orientation and training program in January.

A proposal is being submitted this month for funding to establish a senior conservation corps. Retired folk would be recruited and trained to teach youth and adults about environmental matters, such as soil conservation, stream and air pollution and tree planting.

Another program in the planning stage is using the retired populace in the New River Valley to work in public schools.

The center has been in existence for two years and operates out of an office at the Department of Family and Child Development at Virginia Tech.
