LIBERTY REGROUPS, WINS

Liberty blew a 16-point lead but regained control in the fourth quarter Tuesday night to defeat Buckingham County 72-65 in high school boys' basketball.

The Minutemen (2-0) had to regroup after Buckingham County (0-3) erased its hefty deficit in the fourth quarter of the Seminole District game to tie the game at 62.

David Ross led four Liberty players in double figures with 16 points. Bruce Jacobs added 14 points and 15 rebounds, and J.J. Coles had 13 points.

Buckingham County got a game-high 20 points from Lewis Jones and 17 from Earl Davis. The Knights made only 24 of 42 free throws.

Bland 62

RINER - Terry Millirons gunned in 30 points, and the Eagles wore out the Rockets in the fourth quarter to open their season with a Mountain Empire District victory.

Millirons also had 17 rebounds to lead Auburn, which pulled away by outscoring Bland 25-8 in the final period. The Eagles also got double-figure scoring from Jon Reed (17 points), Mike Bower (11), Bradley Hudgins (10) and Randy Bonds (10).

Shannon Havens led the Rockets (0-1, 0-1) with 20 points, Kevin King had 18 and Jeff Self added 14. \

Grayson County 61

Shawsville 48

SHAWSVILLE - Bryan Boyer scored 16 of his 21 points in the first half as the Blue Devils defeated the Shawnees for their first Mountain Empire District victory.

Grayson County (1-0 overall, 1-0 in the district) led by 12 at halftime and extended its lead to 18 in the third quarter before Shawsville cut the margin to 13 in the final quarter.

Darrell Bibb sank 11 of 18 shots from the floor and scored 23 points for the Shawnees (0-3, 0-1).

Shane Griffith scored 12 points and Shane Widner added 11 for the Blue Devils.

Rocky Gap 56

ROCKY GAP - Jason Light scored 19 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and had five steals as the Buffaloes rolled past the Eagles in a Mountain Empire District game.

Rocky Gap sank only five of 26 shots in the first half and trailed by 20 at halftime.

Sixty-one fouls were called, making trips to the free-throw line commonplace. Floyd County (1-0 overall, 1-0 in the district) hit 20 of 41 foul shots and the Eagles sank 16 of 26.

Eric Faulkner led Rocky Gap with 19 points. \
