STUDENT IN COURT ON WEAPON CHARGE

A police officer who was searching a Cave Spring High School senior's car for alcohol or drugs during a recent routine stop found something more potent: an AK-47 assault rifle and 270 rounds of ammunition.

Officer D.L. Furrow of the Roanoke County Police Department charged the student with possession of a concealed weapon.

Wednesday, Judge John Apostolou took the weapons charge under advisement following a hearing in Roanoke County General District Court.

Typically, that means the judge will dismiss the misdemeanor charge if the student, Daniel M. Shockley, stays out of trouble for the next year.

Police reported finding the assault rifle hidden under some clothes in Shockley's car during a routine traffic stop in the afternoon of Nov. 10, shortly after he left Cave Spring High School.

Police found no evidence, however, that Shockley brought the gun onto school property. Shockley said he does not park his car on school property.

His attorney, Richard Lawrence, said his client had no criminal intent by hiding the gun in the car.

Shockley hid the weapon, which he had bought a few weeks earlier for $750, because he did not want anyone to break into his car, Lawrence said.

Shockley had the gun with him that day because he was going to his grandfather's for target practice, Lawrence said.

At the hearing, Shockley donated the weapon to the Roanoke County Police Department for law enforcement purposes.
