Looking for free publicity, or perhaps just some free chewing tobacco, Trumbo has made high-stakes wagers on the two high school teams from the southern end of his district who'll be competing this weekend for state football championships.
In the Group A showdown between Giles and Lunenburg Central, Trumbo has offered Lunenburg's state senator, Richard Holland, a weekend at Mountain Lake Hotel if Giles loses Saturday.
In return, Holland has offered Trumbo something equally valuable if Giles wins - a year's supply of Redman chewing tobacco.
In the Group AAA clash between Pulaski and Woodson High School, Trumbo has made this bet with Fairfax County state Senator Jane Woods:
If Woodson wins, Woods will provide Trumbo with two tickets to a Washington Redskins game. If Pulaski wins, he'll pay to send Woods on a champagne brunch cruise on Claytor Lake.
Ever the politician, though, Trumbo pointed out this fine print in the deal: Even if Pulaski wins, he loses, he figures, "because of the Washington Redskins' current performance level."
Trumbo, a former offensive and defensive lineman at Covington High School, apparently is more excited about the prospect of a year's supply of chewing tobacco.
