UVA'S BURNS AN ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN

Linebacker Tom Burns, a nuclear-engineering major who started every football game for Virginia this past season, has become the Cavaliers' first academic All-American since Pat Chester in 1979.

Burns, a senior from Clinton, Md., finished third for UVa with 80 tackles this past season and was selected to the All-ACC third team.

Burns has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.92 (on a 4.0 scale) and received the Jim Tatum Award as the top student-athlete among football players in the ACC. In addition, he received an $18,000 grant as one of 15 players recognized as National Scholar-Athletes by the National Football Foundation.
