SAVINGS-BOND SALES CLIMB IN NOVEMBER

Sales of U.S. savings bonds rose 1.2 percent in November from the previous month but were 64.5 percent lower than a year ago when they carried a higher guaranteed interest rate, the Treasury said Tuesday.

Sales totaled $787 million, up from $778 million in October and a 22-month low of $746 million in September. But they were down from $2.22 billion a year ago.

The value of savings bonds held at the end of November reached $171 billion, up from $155.5 billion a year ago.
