ANY TIME'S GOOD TIME TO START ROAD TO BETTER HEALTH

Better later than never.

Trivia time! To whom is the above quote attributed, and is late really better than never?

Titus Livius, 59 B.C.-A.D. 17, wrote it in the prologue to his "History." So it's been in use a long, long time.

According to the new director of the National Institute on Aging, physician Richard J. Hodes, most of the things we think of that improve health and prospects for the future can be "effective at any time."

In addition to the obvious, like walking and swimming, weight training, good diet habits and even giving up smoking can be beneficial no matter when you start.

The NIA is committed to studying how people can improve their physical and mental functioning through lifestyle changes. Although a specific change to prevent Alzheimer's disease has not been discovered, Hodes believes that "as long as the efforts of many brilliant people are being expended, we have the right to hope for dramatic changes in the future."

On that optimistic note, come on out to the food court at the New River Valley Mall this evening at 5:30 p.m. for an AEROBIC DEMONSTRATION by the Christiansburg Senior Center's aerobics class. The group of 20 works out on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, 8-9 a.m. at the Christiansburg National Guard Armory.

An alternative exercise class featuring movement from chair level meets at the armory, 9-10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Ages in the classes range from late 50s to over 80. Anyone over 55 is welcome to participate. The classes are free.

Speaking of SENIORS DISCOUNTS: Rose's in Blacksburg offers 10 percent senior discounts every Wednesday. Revco stores give seniors a 10 percent discount on prescriptions and Revco brand products every day, and 10 percent on everything in the store except tobacco and soft drinks on Wednesdays.

Several restaurants, such as Western Sizzlin and Pargo's, have a senior menu that is discounted.

Please let me know (381-1668) of other New River Valley senior discounts. I'll collect the information and publish it after the first of the year.
