POWER-LINE FOES GET MORE TIME

The State Corporation Commission has granted an extra two weeks for opponents to respond to a finding that Appalachian Power Co. should be allowed to build a major power line in the Roanoke Valley.

Opponents of Apco's proposed line have until Jan. 6 to file their response. The commission's hearing examiner, Howard Anderson Jr., recommended Dec. 12 that the commission approve the Virginia portion of the 765,000-volt line. Participants usually have 15 calendar days to respond.

Apco wants to build a 115-mile line from Oceana, W.Va., to Cloverdale. About one-third of the line would pass through Craig, Botetourt and Roanoke counties.

William Bilenky, attorney for Arcs Inc., a two-state nonprofit group opposed to the line for environmental and economic reasons, said Tuesday that he asked for an extension because of the holidays and his workload.

Neither Apco nor the SCC staff objected, he said.

The SCC, which has the final say, is not under any deadline to rule on the proposed line.
