FLOYD COUNTY HOLDS OFF AUBURN

Jason Light fired in 35 points, including four in overtime, as Floyd County nipped Auburn 72-70 in a Mountain Empire District basketball game Tuesday night.

Auburn's Randy Bonds made a baseline jumper with 1 second left to send the game into overtime tied at 62.

Neither team led by more than six points the whole game.

Jamie Warren had 16 points and Phillip Marshall added 15 for Floyd County (2-1 overall, 2-1 district).

Auburn (2-1, 2-1) got 27 points from Jon Reed, 16 from Bradley Hudgins and 12 from Bonds.

Christiansburg 59

The Vikings forced the Blue Demons into 27 turnovers, and went on to win big in a non-district matchup.

Nathan Hungate led Northside (3-0) with 27 points, and Maurice Garrison added 11.

The Vikings led 37-31 at halftime, but connected on 15 of 24 shots from the floor in the second half to pull away.

Paul Phillips led Christiansburg (2-2) with 21 points.

ROCKY MOUNT - Chad Foutz's three free throws after a foul on a 3-point attempt sparked a 12-1 run at the end of the first half that carried the Eagles to a 12-point halftime lead, an advantage they built on for their first win of the year, a non-district one.

Foutz had a 3-pointer while knocking down 22 points, Carlos Holland fired in a couple of treys and finished with 21 points, and K.C. Hancock and Rico Batista added 11 each for the Eagles (1-2).

Heritage (0-2) was led by George Harris' 16, but he was held to five points in the second half. \

Rocky Gap 62

NARROWS - The Green Wave stormed back from a 19-point fourth quarter deficit behind Patrick Bailey, who had 12 of his 24 during the comeback, to stun the visiting Eagles for the Mountain Empire District victory.

Bailey hit a layup with 20 seconds left to tie the score at 62 with 20 seconds left. He was fouled, but missed the three-point opportunity, but the Green Wave's Norman Perkins snagged the rebound and called time out with 15 seconds left. The ball was inbounded to point guard Brett Mosely, who split through two defenders in the lane to lay in the winning shot.

Jeff White sank a couple of 3-pointers and ended with 12 points for Narrows (1-2 overall, 1-0 in the district). Frank Nunley led Rocky Gap (0-3, 0-3) with 20 points.

Shawsville 40

BLAND - The Rockets used a 31-point second quarter to ice the Mountain Empire District contest.

Shawsville (0-3, 0-2) led 17-14 after one quarter, but Bland (2-1, 2-1) used a full-court press to force numerous Shawnees turnovers in the second quarter.

Bland's Shannon Havens scored eight of his 17 points in the second period, and Scot Goins added 10 points. Thirteen Rockets scored in all.

The Shawnees were led by Darrell Bibb's game-high 18 points. \

Grayson County 71

INDEPENDENCE - Wes Self scored five of his 10 points in the first quarter as host Grayson County took an 11-point lead and the Blue Devils went on to the Mountain Empire District victory.

Bryan Boyer had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Devils (3-0, 3-0) winners and was backed up by Shane Griffith's 16 points. Galax (1-2, 1-1) was paced by Matt Snow's 13 points, Jeff Ross and Ken Houtz added 11 each, and Tito Crockett contributed 10.

APPOMATTOX - The Raiders (4-1) continued their slow starts but came on strong in the third quarter to defeat their Seminole District rivals, the Golden Eagles (1-1).

Hampered by poor shooting, Appomattox trailed 17-8 after the first quarter and 26-23 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Raiders started working the ball inside to center Tyrone Hancock and pulled ahead 43-34. Jason Booker, who sat out the first half, scored his eight points in the fourth quarter to help Appomattox hang on.

Forward Wendell Hodge had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Hancock had 21 points and point guard Brian Goodrich had nine assists and four points for Appomattox.

Geoff Zimmerman had 19 points for Staunton River, and Jeff Woodford had 12. The Golden Eagles lost Cornelius Foxx, who had seven first-quarter points, midway through the second quarter when he broke out in a rash and was unable to continue playing.

Carroll County 47

WYTHEVILLE - The Maroons opened their season with a non-district victory over the Cavaliers (1-3).

Aaron Andrews scored 19 points, Jeff Bourne had 10 points and six steals and Andre Cook had 10 rebounds and five points for George Wythe. The Maroons stepped up their defense in the fourth quarter, which sparked their offense to 26 points, nearly matching their output for the first three quarters.

John Woolford's 20 points led Carroll County.

Liberty 60

BEDFORD - Shawn Martin went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute to boost the Governors past previously undefeated Liberty in a Seminole District matchup.

Martin scored 10 of his game-high 20 points in the final period.

Nelson County (2-2), trailing 53-48 with four minutes to go, rallied to tie it 58-58 before Martin took over. Chris Gray added 18 points for the Governors.

Liberty (3-1, 3-1) got 14 points from Stephen Shrader and 11 from Bruce Jacobs. \

GIRLS\ William Fleming 49

Franklin County 43

Ashaki Johnson made all eight of her free throws in the final quarter as the Colonels edged the Eagles in a Roanoke Valley District contest.

Felecia Manns led all scorers with 19 points, and Johnson scored 17 and had 10 assists as Fleming (3-2, 1-0) connected on 10 of 13 free throws in the final quarter.

Patricia Campbell led Franklin County (2-2, 0-1) with 11 points. \
