BYRD HOLDS OFF GLENVAR SURGE

Michael McGuire made all four of his free throws in the final minute-and-a-half Tuesday night as William Byrd edged Glenvar 66-63 in a non-district boys' high school basketball matchup.

William Byrd (2-0) led 39-28 at half, but Glenvar (0-2) stormed back in the second half and took a 57-56 lead with four minutes remaining in the game.

The Terriers made 14 of 17 free throws, and were led by Donald Childress' 24 points. McGuire added 16.

David Robinson and Brad Melton led Glenvar with 12 points apiece.

\ E.C. Glass 55\ Cave Spring 51

LYNCHBURG - The Knights blew an early 14-2 lead and the host Hilltoppers held on for the non-district victory.

Cave Spring closed to 53-51 with 10 seconds left on a layup by Kevin Davis, but Chris Tunkel made both ends of a one-and-one with six seconds left to push the Glass lead to 55-51. Cave Spring's subsequent turnover settled the issue.

Matt Matheny led the Knights (1-2) with 19 points and James Irvin added 16. Dexter Hubbard led Glass (2-2) with 17.

\ William Fleming 71\ Albemarle 55

CHARLOTTESVILLE - William Fitzgerald scored 21 points to lead the visiting Colonels to a non-district victory.

Point guard Derrick Hines added 16 points for Fleming (4-1), which limited Albemarle (2-4) to only seven points in the second quarter.

Albemarle was led by Chris Taffe's 15 points.

\ Lord Botetourt 65\ Covington 62

COVINGTON - Shannon Williams scored 21 points and Ryan Salvi added 15 as the Cavaliers held on for a non-district win over the Cougars.

Lord Botetourt (2-1) led by eight points with 30 seconds remaining in the game, but Keeno Jones, who led all scorers with 26 points, and Corey Hunter nailed three-point shots to pull within two. Covington (0-2) had a chance to win the game, but turned the ball over with four seconds remaining.

The Cavaliers enjoyed a large advantage in rebounding: 52-33.

\ Northside 78\ Christiansburg 59

The Vikings forced the Blue Demons into 27 turnovers, and went on to win big in a non-district matchup.

Nathan Hungate led Northside (3-0) with 27 points and Maurice Garrison added 11.

The Vikings led 37-31 at halftime, but connected on 15 of 24 shots from the floor in the second half to pull away.

Paul Phillips led Christiansburg (2-2) with 21 points.

Roanoke Valley Christian 75\ Lynchburg Christian 73

LYNCHBURG - Philip Wagner scored seven of his nine points in the fourth quarter as the Eagles suppressed a charge by the Bulldogs to win their opener in the Virginia Independence Conference.

Josh MacDermod, who made two free throws with 15 seconds left, paced Roanoke Valley Christian (2-3, 1-0) with 18 points. Billy Fluker had 11 points and Scott Apjok added a team-high nine rebounds.

Lynchburg Christian (3-1, 1-1) was led by Lit Blanks with 20 points and Jason Brown with 19.

Roanoke Catholic 61\ Hargrave 55

CHATHAM - The Celtics jumped to a 15-2 lead and never trailed again in a Virginia Independent Conference game.

Roanoke Catholic (1-0, 1-0) had its lead cut to two points early in the fourth quarter, but hung on with key free throws. Deon Royer scored 15 points, D.L. Bratton scored 10 points and had nine rebounds, and Tony Joyce had five points, seven assists and six steals.

\ Franklin County 74\ Heritage 49

ROCKY MOUNT - Chad Foutz's three free throws after a foul on a 3-point attempt sparked a 12-1 run at the end of the first half that carried the Eagles to a 12-point halftime lead and their first victory of the year, a non-district matchup over Heritage.

Foutz scored 22 points, Carlos Holland had 21 points, and K.C. Hancock and Rico Batista added 11 each for the Eagles (1-2). Heritage (0-2) was led by George Harris' 16, but he was held to five points in the second half.\ Rockbridge County 75\ James River 37

LEXINGTON - The Wildcats jumped to a 45-15 halftime lead en route to a non-district blowout of the Knights.

Marty Early scored a game-high 24 points, Kenny Lewis scored 10 and Rob Hoyle added two points and 10 rebounds. Every player scored for Rockbridge County (2-1).

James River (0-1) turned the ball over 23 times in the first half.

\ GIRLS\ \ William Fleming 49\ Franklin County 43

Ashaki Johnson made all eight of her free throws in the final quarter as the Colonels edged the Eagles in a Roanoke Valley District contest.

Felecia Manns led all scorers with 19 points, and Johnson scored 17 and had 10 assists as Fleming (3-2, 1-0) connected on 10 of 13 free throws in the final quarter.

Patricia Campbell led Franklin County (2-2, 0-1) with 11 points.\ Cave Spring 52\ E.C. Glass 37

The Knights outscored the Hilltoppers 18-8 in the second quarter to take command of the non-district game and remain unbeaten.

Cave Spring (4-0) was led by Cheryl Rhodes with 16 points.

E.C. Glass fell to 2-2.
