NOT TOO MANY STUDENTS ASKING FOR FREE CONDOMS

School and city officials say they are not surprised that only 43 of the city's 2,665 high school students have asked nurses for free condoms.

To combat sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted teen pregnancies, the Alexandria School Board voted in June to let high school nurses dispense condoms. The program began in September.

Darhyl Jasper, the city's public health nursing supervisor, said Many students are unaware condoms are available, despite heavy publicity about the program and announcements at the beginning of the school year.

Fran Meyer, health education specialist for the state Department of Education, said she knew of no other Virginia school division that distributed condoms.
