CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Attorney General Darrell V. McGraw Jr. and three county school boards are suing two Virginia dairies in federal court for alleged bid-rigging and price-fixing.
The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Roanoke, Va., alleges that Valley Rich Dairy and Meadow Gold Dairies Inc. between 1984 and 1988 discussed what they would bid on milk contracts with school systems in Greenbrier, Monroe and Pocahontas counties.
The dairies, both in Roanoke, decided in advance which would get which contract and the other company would either not bid or intentionally bid too high, the lawsuit alleges.
Because of those actions, the counties paid up to 2 cents per half-pint more than necessary, Assistant Attorney General James Carbone said Wednesday.
Valley Rich officials did not return a message seeking comment Wednesday. Meadow Rich General Manager Jack Dobbins was out of town Wednesday and did not return a message left at his office. - Associated Press
Man sentenced to life for kidnapping clerk
ABINGDON - A federal judge on Wednesday imposed a life sentence on a man who kidnapped a Goodwill store clerk, stabbed her and left her in a remote area of Kentucky.
Roger Lee Shelton, 37, pleaded guilty in October to kidnapping and interstate transportation of a stolen vehicle. U.S. District Judge Samuel Wilson gave him the maximum penalty with no chance of parole and ordered him to pay more than $3,000 in restitution to the victim.
Nancy Louise Goodman, 35, was abducted from the store on June 7 three days after Shelton was released on parole after serving time for breaking and entering in Asheboro, N.C., Assistant U.S. Attorney Randy Ramseyer said.
Shelton faces additional charges in Kentucky of kidnapping and attacking another woman at a shopping center after abandoning Goodman and taking her car.

Man's conviction is for manslaughter
STUART - A Patrick County man has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the slaying of a Martinsville man.
Freal M. Lewis, 54, had been charged with first-degree murder in the March shooting of Jose Cesareo Mendoza-Almanza, whose body was found in a pasture about 600 yards from Lewis' home. An autopsy showed he was shot once in the back with a .25-caliber pistol.
The jury deliberated for about 35 minutes before returning its verdict Tuesday. It recommended a one-year prison sentence.
The verdict indicated the jurors "thought it was an accident," Patrick Sheriff Jay Gregory said.
