GARDEN CLUB DECKS MUSEUM'S HALLS

Members of the Lake Spring Garden Club in Salem have begun what they hope will become an annual tradition.

They have put up Christmas decorations throughout the Salem Museum - on all six mantles and 19 windows.

"Everybody is contributing," said Lila Clouser, president of the club. "People have brought greens, holly, candles, ribbons."

About 10 of the club's approximately 30 members turned out recently to do the decorating in time for the museum to be in its "Christmas dress" for the Salem Christmas parade and the Olde Fashioned Christmas celebration. The parade made it just before the rain, but the old-fashioned celebration was rained out.

The museum's decorations are appropriate to the old-fashioned theme.

"We did not want any glitz," Clouser said. "We want to keep the decorations in the same motif as the historical period."

The house and its accompanying Christmas Through the Ages exhibit represent the period from about 1890 to the middle of this century.

Clouser estimated the total value of the decorations at $350, but none of that is being paid by the museum.

The garden club put up about $100, she said, and the rest was contributed by individual club members who helped with the decorations.

The Lake Spring club planted flowers on the museum grounds this summer, and Clouser hopes the club can repeat the process next summer. Some of the garden club members also are members of the Salem Historical Society, owner of the museum.
