Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, the USA select team committee chairman, announced the selection Thursday of Foster and Washington State coach Kelvin Sampson as assistants. The head coach is George Raveling of Southern California.
"One of the big reasons I'm doing it is George and I are such good friends, and I enjoy travel," Foster said Thursday.
The '94 Goodwill Games are July 23-Aug. 7 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The eight-team men's basketball tournament is July 23-28.
"It's an opportunity to work with a dozen or so of the best college players in the country," Foster said. "It's got to be a good learning experience."
In a statement released by USA Basketball, Raveling praised Sampson and Foster.
"I think we've assembled an outstanding coaching staff," Raveling said. "Bill and I have been friends for over 20 years. He's been a mentor, a friend and kind of like a big brother to me. He's responsible for my growth as a coach. I don't know of anyone more revered or respected by his peers than Bill is."
Foster, best known for coaching Clemson from 1975-84, is in his third year at Tech, where his record is 24-36. His overall mark is 455-283. - Staff report
