DIFFERENT KIND OF GIFT FOR BOSS

The employees of Tom's Distributors Inc. wanted to give president and owner Jimmy Spikes and his wife, Amber, something different this Christmas.

"We usually just give them a thing," said one representative of the group, who wishes to remain anonymous. "But [Spikes] is a man who has everything."

So the employees took up a collection and contributed to the Good Neighbors Fund in the Spikes' honor; a perfect gift, the employee said, "because it's local, and we know where it goes."

"You should have seen the look on Mr. Spikes' face. . . . He said, `This is the first gift anyone has given me that makes any damn sense. I don't need anything, but there are so many people who do.' "
