EUROPEAN NATIONS RILE GREECE ON MACEDONIA

Discounting Greek claims that their action could worsen Balkan instability, four European Community nations infuriated Greece on Thursday by establishing diplomatic ties with Macedonia.

Germany, Italy, Britain and Denmark humiliated fellow EC member Greece with their orchestrated move. France said it and the remainder of the 12 EC nations - excluding Greece - likely would follow suit by Jan. 1.

Macedonia was admitted to the United Nations on April 9.

Greece has refused to take up diplomatic ties with Macedonia until the name is changed, saying its use implies a claim on a Greek province also called Macedonia. - Associated Press
