Jail employees who discovered the fire moved prisoners from the second floor into holding cells on the ground floor.
None of the inmates required treatment as a result of the fire, but three officers were treated by the Wythe County Rescue Squad for smoke inhalation.
The jail had 33 inmates at the time of the fire. Afterward, 16 were moved temporarily to jails in Pulaski, Smyth and Carroll counties. Repairs are expected to be completed so they can be returned this weekend.
